Mary Ann Back's collection of short stories, Dead Reckoning, was fabulous! I loved the variety and each were incredibly well written. I cannot wait to read more from her! ~ Julie Back
What a gem! I enjoyed these stories from new-to-me author Mary Ann Back. The book is filled with a wide variety of stories--from SF, to Southern Gothic, to straight-out horror. Some of my favorite stories were Away, Sadie's Choice, and Prime Cut. Ms. Back creates characters you won't soon forget. I hope she has a novel in the works because I would love to read a long book from her.
Always enjoy Mary Ann Back's work. ~Book Junkie/GDengani
Great short stories. ~Susan Hemming
Dead Reckoning is entertainment at its finest. The author grabs your interest from the first sentence and doesn't let you go until the last delightful word. I had the good fortune to hear her read several tales in her own voice bringing her unusual characters leaping to life in my mind's eye as only a truly unique genius can. I highly recommend one of her readings or workshops as she shares her techniques and inspiration. Tales that are funny, scary, with unusual twists and turns ensure that Mary Ann Back is an up-and-coming storyteller to watch!
Back's stories are by turns funny, sad, dark, and suspenseful. Most of all she creates characters that evoke the feel and smell of the small town south. My favorites are Away which starts with "Molly Porter vanished from Willow Grove in the spring of 2011". The other is Lola where "Stiffs had a way of piling up at the Blue Note Lounge."
The book had been sitting in my stack for a while. I picked it up, didn't put it down til I'd read every story in the collection. Back's that good.
Every story just drew me in and gripped me with humor, curiosity, suspense and surprises! I found Dead Reckoning very creative and filled with a wide variety of plots and characters' voices. I enjoy reading parts out loud to share with others the experiences of Mary Ann Back's very well crafted writing.
I have just finished reading Dead Reckoning, a Short Story Collection by Mary Ann Back and I enjoyed it!
Ms. Back has a very elaborate way of explaining scenarios that make them quite vivid. Her characters are just that, characters. Strong willed, independent, and usually very colorful. And what an imagination!
Some of the stories are sweet like The Pecking Order, The Prodigal, and The Summer of My Father. Others are kind of scary like the Root of All Evil and The Transmogrification of Gordon Gilbert. Where does she get those ideas?!
Sometimes Ms. Back gives us a lesson in living such as in Extraordinary Moments and The Truths That Set You Free.
I am very hopeful for Ms. Back’s career as an author; she is a joy to read.
